Health and Physical Education

At Burrowes State School, sport is a big part of our school community and something our students love. We have a number of different events that happen throughout the year that students also look forward to.

We have 4 sport houses:

Kargon – Red

Wunnamurra – Blue

Coolawin – Yellow

Yongurra – Green

Generally the same family are allocated to the same house colour on enrolment – they stay in this house throughout their time at Burrowes State School.

Sports Days

School Athletics Days are held in Term 2. Juniors do a half day of running and games (Prep – Year 3) while the seniors (Year 4 – Year 6) do all the track and field events (running, long jump, high jump, shot put). Students who are 10-12 years have the opportunity to participate in the Logan District Athletics within Term 3.

Cross Country

In Term 1, students participate in the annual cross country carnival. It is a fun filled day where students represent their sport houses. Students have the opportunity to compete in the Logan Districts Cross Country if they make the time qualification.

Districts

Districts is an event where schools all across logan come together to compete in the selected sport/event.

Sports:

When competing in selected sports at the logan district level, students must have competed in that sport outside of school for a minimum of 12 months. These nominations come out throughout the year – it is the parents/caregivers responsibility to transport their child to and from the selected district event.

Districts Athletics/Cross Country:

Students are selected to attend the athletics and cross country district carnival based on their results throughout the sports carnivals. Students must meet a minimum height, length and/or time to be able to compete at the logan districts events. Notes will be given to the students who make these requirements after the schools sport days.

Gala Days

At Burrowes State School the students in Years 5 and 6 are given the opportunity to participate in Gala Days. Once a semester Burrowes partners up with other schools in the area and compete in different sports. The students train for these Gala Days every Friday afternoon from 1.30-2.30pm. Some of the sports that the students have competed in so far have been:

Rugby League

Basketball

Soccer

Volleyball

The sports can change from semester to semester depending on interest.

Swimming

Burrowes State School is also a learn to swim school. Each year the students at Burrowes participate in a learn to swim program that is fully funded by Education Queensland. Each student is given 4-5 lessons over a week period. The students are transported to and from the pool each day and fully supervised by their classroom teachers and the staff at the pool. The swim program encompasses learn to swim, water safety and most importantly FUN. Generally the swim program runs from Week 7 until the end of week 10 in Term 3.

High School Gala Days

Our students are often inviting to attend gala days at our feeder high schools. Students go with a coach and their team to compete against students from other schools. Some students are inviting to join that high schools excellence program at the end of the high school gala day.
